Breast Cancer Awareness

Each year, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an international campaign to increase awareness of the disease and raise funds for research. The disease does not discriminate by race, ethnicity, geography, age or gender.

In 2020, worldwide there were 2.3 million women diagnosed and 685,000 deaths. By the end of that year, there were 7.8 million women living with breast cancer who had been diagnosed within the previous five years. Further, 85% of women diagnosed had no family history of breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Research Foundation – mission is to prevent and cure breast cancer by advancing the world’s most promising research. Their goal: No more fear. No more hospital visits. No more side effects or needless suffering. No more loved ones lost to breast cancer.

Surviving Breast Cancer – an educational and virtual community platform, it incorporates an integrative and collaborative approach including risk reduction strategies, prevention, treatment, survivorship, living with a terminal diagnosis, and navigating end of life. Part of these efforts include their wide-ranging podcast series called Breast Cancer Conversations, which has 127 episodes posted as of October 5th, 2021.

Rethink Breast Cancer – based in Toronto, Canada, this organization educates, empowers and advocates for people worldwide who are affected by breast cancer through boldfaced campaigns, content, programs and resources. 

National Breast Cancer Foundation – mission to provide help and inspire hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education, and support services.

Know Your Lemons – to improve early detection worldwide through creative and empowering education that is friendly, accessible, and inclusive. As of 2020, they report having reached 1 billion people online.

Breast Centres Network – international network of clinical centres exclusively dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. It is a project created by ESO (European School of Oncology) with the aim to promote and improve breast cancer care in Europe and throughout the world. 

The European Breast Cancer Coalition – based in Milan, Italy, and known as Europa Donna, it encompasses 47 member countries. The coalition has 10 Goals, starting with: 1) promoting the dissemination and exchange of factual, up-to-date information on breast cancer throughout Europe, and 2) promoting breast awareness and breast cancer prevention.

Breast Cancer Hub – a U.S. 501(c)3 nonprofit organization working at the grassroots level in the U.S., India, and Africa, focused on saving lives through awareness, volunteering, education and research.

Lobular Breast Cancer Alliance – focuses on the sixth most frequently diagnosed cancer of women in the U.S., with nearly 44,000 new patients diagnosed each year. Research indicates that ILC is a unique histological subtype of breast cancer with distinct biological and behavioral differences.

The Oncologist – published a study in February 2021 titled, Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients with Breast Cancer in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. It provides an exhaustive analysis and synthesis of a body of evidence of breast cancer HRQoL (health related quality of life) in LAC and gives reference values averaged across nine countries.
